The only portrait I ever saw of Jane Austen appears on countless spines of the New Library edition of “Pride and Prejudice.” Drawn by her sister Cassandra, Jane looks, well, like one would request the witty Miss Austen to look: poised, civilized, reflective and quick-witted. With some imagination and forgiveness with regard to the talent of the artist, she could even be conceived as glorious with her stout dusky eyes and ringlet fringe peeking out from the typical gentlewoman’s cap of that time period. How ingenious for Hollywood to cast the sumptuous Anne Hathaway with her silky brown hair, curvaceous figure, deer-in-the-headlights eyes and perfect lips as the young burgeoning author? Let’s face it—no one wants to be a insensible Jane – and expressionless she is not–she’s pleasing noteworthy got it all: not only is she innocently fine, she’s independent, wants to work, exhibits impeccable manners, loves her family, acts upon reliable ideals all of which along with her cricket skills results in attracting and snaring the deliciously boyish James McAvoy ( Last King of Scotland) as supposed ill-fated lover, Tom Lefroy.

As a film, all of this romanticism works wonderfully. The verdant countryside shimmers in the sunshine. The period clothing—all empire waists, beribboned hair, top hats and velvet frockcoats—-sway and rustle delightfully as the couples dance and assure in clever well-mannered innuendo as expectant matchmaking parents play chaperone and discover lucrative alliances that will status their children up for life. The dialogue sufficiently reflects that Austenian repartee which the educated audience delights in as it makes them feel they are on an even keel with one of the greatest satirists in the English language. The concept of Austin’s relationship with Lefroy as presented first in Jon Spence’s biography from which the film gets its name, suggests that many of Austin’s dream partnerships as presented in her novels were based on steady, personal and emotional incidents that although painful, gave her characters so grand flesh and blood poignancy, we serene discuss them today.

Whether or not any of this is actually apt matters naught. The film seduces with the same charming intensity of McAvoy’s blue-eyed gape as he quite openly undresses Hathaway in his mind. Is Lefroy the basis for Mr. Darcy? This is difficult to say, but I wouldn’t mind bumping into this film’s Tom Lefroy while I was taking my daily constitutional. Of course, I’d have to go relieve in time to become a few years younger—or perhaps not as flirty cousin Eliza de Feuillide certainly does have her arrangement with Jane’s rakish brother, Henry Austen (Joe Anderson) —oh, what money can catch!

With that in mind, leave the historical authenticity to the Austen scholars and indulge in the film for its performances and its visual delights. Secondary players congregate to create a veritable Austen menagerie of characters that for the most allotment plays a bit too conveniently to deem reality. But capture it all in fun —the film leads one to enjoy that Austen needed runt imagination to conceptualize her personalities; rather they were all there under her nose, objective waiting to be captured on paper. Nevertheless, Maggie Smith as the formidable Lady Gresham never fails to elicit a chuckle as does her fictional counterpart Lady Catherine de Bourgh from “Pride and Prejudice.” Julie Walters and James Cromwell as Jane’s parents seem the perfect Mr. and Mrs Bennett clones while Laurence Fox, as Mr. Wisley (Mr. Collins again from “Pride and Prejudice”) interjects fair the proper 21st century computer geek persona to the mix to act the perfect foil for the more glamorous but definitely shallower Tom Lefroy character.

Bottom line: After countless Masterpiece Theatre adaptations of all six of Jane Austen’s novels as well as a herd of current films plot to accepted music (Bride and Prejudice was one Bollywood version) it is not surprising that the author herself has arrive into scrutiny in this charming albeit fictionalized biopic. If you are not tired of yet another Darcy/Bennett rendition, you will most likely bag “Becoming Jane” two hours worth of Jane Austen’s world lovingly preserved. Recommended.

The DVD for this movie will be coming out Feb 12, 2008 and will feature deleted scenes, commentary with director Julian Jarrold, writer Kevin Hood and producer Robert Bernstein, becoming Jane Pop-Up Facts & Footnotes(ok, this is enough to accomplish me want to capture it) and a Discovering the Genuine Jane Austen featurette

The actors were fabulous in this movie and it was well staged. The movie is supposed to be based on a few months of Jane’s life when she was 20. H Some scenes were added to fabricate her life more dramatic. There isn’t very many facts known about Jane so any biographical movie about her will occupy fiction, but I consider what most people criticized about this film is it borrows too noteworthy from Pride & Prejudice.

The facts about Jane are she was a witty and curious person. We know this from her letters and her writings. She was sort of a tomboy when she was young and played baseball and cricket. She had a radiant and adventurous brother named Henry who helped publish two of her novels after her death. He did marry their cousin. Tom Lefroy was a person she knew and she did flirt with him when she was 20. Many years later he said he did savor Jane but it was a “boyish fancy”. His first daughter was named Jane. When she was 27 she was proposed to by a weathly but awkward man named Harry Bigg-Whithers, who she at first approved but changed her mind the next day.

For people with children, there is some brief nudity (male backsides), some women that appear to be prostitutes, fist fighting and some suggestive language.

Other people have criticized this movie because they search for it as another plot to cash in on Jane Austen’s popularity. I feel that the film does try to shed a dinky light on her accurate personality.

Their hotfoot meanders”

For me this sums up the atmosphere of “Kino’s lope” – this is a poetic, but unpretenious series. The viewer follows Kino, a young girl, and her motoraide as they drift from country to country, staying three days in each to soak up the culture and understand the ways of the people that live within them. Each country is vastly different with extremely different political, technological, and right standards.

The series manages something rarely attainable in anime – tantalizing, mysterious, and intellectual storylines that originate the viewer really reflect about the world around them, but without being overly complex and confusing. The makers of ther series also do not force their viewpoints on the viewer; instead the makers point to the information and leave the viewer to think the standards of each country themselves. The series also benefits from having a truly likeable heroine, who is not girly but worldly and satisfactory.

This may sound tedious, but have me it is not. After the second episode, I was as fervent as Kino to visit the next country and tell their culture. The stories are genuinely absorbing, unpredictable, and sometimes heartbreaking. There is action as Kino sometimes finds herself in peril and some unexpected brutal images. The graphics are attractive and recent. The soundtrack and dubbing are estimable.

This is not a comic or romantic series and there are no mecha battles. However, if you want to try a series (13 episodes) that treats the viewer with some intelligence and is genuinely racy that you should definitely rob this. Similiar to Haibane Renmei in tone and graphics, but more down-to-earth. I watched the whole series in one day and afterwards felt like packing a bag and invesitgating the world myself.

What intrigued me most about Kino’s Meander was the fact that the leading character was an androgynous looking female on a lunge with her talking motorcycle. Unprejudiced reading about it, the legend sounds queer but once you inaugurate watching it, it makes sense in the world it takes area in. The world Kino lives in is almost like our absorb, except that each country Kino visits seems to be at a different stage of civilization. You could say Kino’s world was tailor made objective for us to learn the factual lessons it’s trying to boom. Through Kino’s move we approach face to face with human desires that can either lead a country into destruction or into a current age of change. Our main character is Kino who is unflinching in her decide to continue her prance and tries to support herself uninvolved from the fate of those people she meets. It is refreshing to finally seek a character that isn’t so self-righteous to contemplate she has the answers for everybody’s problems. Kino’s motorcycle Hermes is a righteous vehicle for seeing the puzzling world from a non-human perspective. None of the character designs are particularly glorious nor does the animation effect any ragged anime viewer. But the new advance of looking at human nature without the preachiness of other shows makes Kino worth a view.

My wife (who has had three operations on an inoperable brain tumor) and I found this a titillating, spellbinding documentary when we watched it on PBS last night. Both surgeons impressed us with their humanity and with the awful effort they face in delivering awful news to patients and in practicising world class medicine in the Ukraine. A noteworthy irony: the featured operation was done in a archaic KGB building; the KGB had hasseled the Ukrainian surgeon for several years for providing unauthorized medical services.

The comments on the PBS website devoted to this film assume a wide range of deep emotions that many viewers felt as they watched and reflected on this documentary. The film maker’s description of Mr. Marsh is good on the money in my opinion: “He is firstly an artist and then a surgeon. He’s willing to peruse at surgery and surgeons. He’s prepared to be vulnerable … He’s the very opposite of the arrogant, repressed surgical model.”

Incidentally, the true map to address a member or fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons is to exhaust the title Mr, Miss, Mrs, or Ms (not Dr) . This system (which applies only to surgeons, not physicians) has its origins in the 16th century, when surgeons were barber-surgeons and did not have a medical degree (or indeed any formal qualification), unlike physicians, who held a University medical degree.

The documentary honored (honoured? ) this usage, and my wife and I honor both physicians. A incredible film from our common television dwelling.

PBS has establish together a astonishing website devoted to this film (link in first comment) .

Winner of nine International Awards: Cloak East Awards, Best Film & Best Documentary; Silver Docs, Best International Documentary; Hot Docs, Best International Documentary; Expresion en Corto, Best International Documentary; Shanghai TV Festival, Best International Documentary; Kos Health Film Festival, Audience Award; Sheffield DocFest, Audience Award; Docudays Kyiv, Audience Award; and, Zagreb, Audience Award.

Approximately an hour and a half in length, the English Surgeon was funded by: The Ford Foundation; The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation; and The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Additional funding was provided by: Wellcome Trust; CBA-DFID Broadcast Media Scheme; and YLE TV2 Documentaries.

Although the DVD jacket cautions viewers that the contents may not be appropriate for all and that viewer discretion is advised, I must caution readers that once you originate watching this DVD, you’ll be mesmerized by not only the inspiring storyline, but also by the techniques and extremely exquisite professional work by all who partook in the production of this documentary.

For those expecting to conception one and a half hours of brain surgery, you’ll be disappointed (the staunch neurosurgery doesn’t originate until almost an hour into the film, and then segments are briefly shown for a few seconds at a time, lasting about ten minutes in totality) . The surgery itself is a segment of the epic rather than being a documentary about the procedures of brain surgery. Regular viewers of TV series such as NCIS or CSI regularly survey scenes that are very mighty more graphic/squeamish than those depicted in this film.

The beauty of this documentary is in its presentation–you forget that you’re watching a documentary as you rep immersed in the stories told. As filmmaker, Geoffrey Smith, tells: “this is the anecdote of three men, two of whom have a profound relationship, a friendship, and the third one, known as a patient…they all jog to Kyiv…the film follows them through a journey–an operation, and on to recovery.” In the process, the film concentrates more on Dr. Marsh as a surgeon–what his life is like, the difficulties and joys of his work, as well as the emotional conflicts encountered. Additionally, throughout the documentary, some of the other cases on which Dr. Marsh is working are shown; each case is different, as is each prospect.

Although the English Surgeon immediately captures and captivates audiences, as if watching a film, this isn’t a work of fiction–it’s a documentary portraying real-life experiences, and as such, you pay acute attention, for it’s about a possibility that could affect not only you, your family, friends, acquaintances, and neighbors, but also strangers you may occasionally pass in public places. Dr. Marsh loves using his hands, and he loves using tools–he utilizes both very aptly, as they complement his life’s chosen career and occupation.

The characters in this film are the real-life souls narrating their personal life scripts–the surgical team, the patients, the hospital staff, the family members, and others. Not only is the anecdote personal in a very right sense, but the scenes are varied (taking spot in a hospital, in a physician’s home, traveling through the countryside, visiting a patient’s home, etc.) with film footage from two countries, the variety and bound of this documentary become all the more fascinating and consuming.

This is a film of contrasts: a fireplace in England vs. a fireplace in Ukraine; a religious photo on a calendar in an English hospital (St. Georges Hospital in London) vs. a mammoth embroidered tapestry with a prayer hanging on a wall (in addition to religious icons on walls) in a Ukrainian hospital (Lipska Hospital in/near Zolochiv) ; inputting data on a computer in England vs. talking over the phone in Ukraine; and, dozing off on a chair in England vs. walking through a sleeping car on a scream in Ukraine.

Albeit in English (without subtitles), whenever Ukrainian is spoken, English subtitles are provided.

Dr. Marsh’s personal sage had a speak bearing/impact on the future direction that his life would consume. When his son, as a baby, had a brain tumor, Dr. Marsh found himself desperate for someone to back him. And, later, as he said, he couldn’t “prance away from that need in others.” This is the tale of that segment of Dr. Marsh’s life which portrays his 15-year friendship with Ukrainian surgeon, Dr. Ihor Kurilets, his Ukrainian experiences, and his never-ending reaching out and helping others. He not only didn’t bound away from others in need; when indispensable, he got on a plane in pursuit of fulfilling his altruistic goals. His compassion and caring are truly an inspiration to all who learn his memoir.

His seventeen-year esteem affair with Ukraine started in 1992, when Dr. Marsh first stepped on Ukrainian soil–he had been asked to give lectures on brain surgery. On his last day of that first sprint, Dr. Marsh visited a situation hospital in Kyiv where he saw that there was no equipment, no electricity, patients were left to die, and where he was “appalled to inspect a completely broken down medical system.” That was in 1992–that was what the Soviet government had left Ukraine as a legacy. Ukraine had gained her independence a few months earlier on August 24, 1991–that mighty needed to be repaired and rebuilt, both spiritually and materially, was without a expect. That last day, Dr. Marsh also met Dr. Kurilets (who told him, “Dr. Marsh, we need you. We need change.”) –and a deep friendship ensued.

Over the years, each time that Dr. Marsh visited Ukraine, it was with a original conception, with a unique medical instrument, and, as Ukrainian surgeon Kurilets stated, “it was not as a medical cooperative misfortune, but it was worthy deeper–it was as if Dr. Marsh was my elder brother.”

As a prelude to the brain surgery, we’re given a inspect of the preparations that were under plan both in England and in Ukraine. In one scene, Dr. Kurilets enters a room at Lipska Hospital in Ukraine, walks up to a smart painting, which hangs on one of the hospital’s walls, and states: “it’s my celebrated painting, heroes–Kozaks.” And, we can compare Kozaks with us. There are many similarities with us because they are happy–because they won the battle. And, the same happened with us up to the successful stages. Sometimes, I suggest that I’m at this location (pointing to a state in the painting) . And, my colleagues (pointing in a circular motion around the circumference of the table in the painting) are sitting around the table–and, by the procedure, the table means in surgery quite something–Kozak’s table–but it can be a surgical table, also. So, they are delighted around the table, and we are also overjoyed and dismal around the neurosurgical table. So, I like it very, very considerable.”

The patient with a brain tumor is Marian, who lives in Zolochiv, 400 kms (248.5 miles) west of Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. Marian’s preparations for surgery allow the viewer some glimpses into Ukrainian life: a handsome, pastel pastoral scene, which includes the exterior of a Ukrainian church steeped in snow, when Marian visits his Ukrainian parish church to pray for a successful surgical outcome; a choir singing, as the interior is seen. (In Ukrainian churches, pews didn’t exist–people would stand for up to four hours during services.)

If I, personally, needed brain surgery, or knew someone who did, this is the DVD that I would want to peruse, and would heartily recommend to others–for it informs as it lessens any awe about the procedures. A must-see documentary and testament to the work of a selfless living hero, the English Surgeon is definitely worth five stars plus, and should be in libraries, both public and personal worldwide!

However, this was one of my accepted shows when it was on in the slack 90’s (I cannot enjoy it’s been 10 years already!!!) . And, it is smooth in my top 5 of all time to this day.

Why? Well, for one thing, unbiased perceive what some of the key people enthusiastic have gone on to do after making Sports Night: The West Soar (Creator/Writer/Producer Aaron Sorkin, actor Josh Malina, plus guest spots by many SportsNight regulars), Six Feet Under (Peter Krause), Desperate Housewives (Felicity Huffman) . For each of these pros, ‘Sports Night’ was a key launchpad for the rest of their careers.

(And, of course, the already well-respected Robert Guillaume was a key member of the cast. He suffered a debilitating stroke mid-production and composed gave bravura perfomances on his return.)

This expose is one of the rarest of TV gems: a comedy that does not pander, that challenges you to preserve up. Anyone who regularly watched the first few seasons of ‘The West Wing’ will glimpse one of Sorkin’s approved devices, the fast-talking, no-pauses, walking-down-the-hallway conversation. This method is not to everyone’s taste, but it’s a expansive one for the suitable actors and writers, and a definite species of TV viewer.

And yet, the indicate rewards even casual viewers with witty, incisive, insightful commentary and critique of unprejudiced about everything. It’s honest expressionless silly most of the time.

The tagline was “It’s about sports. The blueprint Charlie’s Angels was about law enforcement”. And that about sums it up. Its focus is on human relationships in that most volatile environment, the workplace.

This workplace impartial happens to be an even more of a pressure-cooker than most: a TV studio producing live sports news shows. Consider ‘ESPN SportsCenter’. Yet, it’s not supposed to actually be SportsCenter, since they wisely wink to reality and refer to “Bristol” (the dependable city where ESPN is headquartered) as their competition. I always concept this was a clever map, since ESPN is a sister company to ABC, the network ‘Sports Night’ ran on. Eveyone else (Fox, CNN, et al) has tried to beat ESPN at its contain game, and lost, and ‘Sports Night’ keeps that feeling of being a decided underdog.

Though the stakes aren’t as high for the rest of the world, the pressure of the environment to the people in it (and therefore by extension to the viewer) is noteworthy like Sorkin’s ‘West Wing’ — not as many dramatic world crises, but unexcited plenty of “must react NOW!!!” raw material that Sorkin and team mine for sublime humorous enact.

Yes, it’s silly, very silly in fact. But what appealed to me most is that quite often Sports Night could be poignant, even at times dramatic. Again, not the faux-gavitas that most sitcoms try to accomplish with that corny, “a very special episode of…”, ripe-for-satire phoniness. When there is deep human emotion to be felt, the explain portrays it in fair the moral quantities. Breakups, lost career opportunities, even some of the ficitious “right world” storylines have objective that worthy more feeling of true human emotion than do honest about any other TV comedy, or even many TV dramas. Most of that reality is due to the characters being portrayed as fleshed-out human beings, at least as distinguished as can be done in a 30-minute TV format. They aren’t exactly just to life, but they aren’t objective cardboard cut-outs either. An estimable example is how Robert Guillaume’s real-life stroke, and subsequent return to the explain, was handled onscreen: brilliantly, of course.

In the kill, if you are like me, you will fancy Sports Night mainly for the charcaters themselves. I really came to like them, a lot. I wanted to know more about them. Even the guest spots were engrossing, like Felicity Huffman’s real-life husband, William H. Macy, as a explain “fixer”. That’s why the cancellation was so painful for so many. I had to wait another five years for another TV comedy that could rival it — ‘Arrested Development’, another cult fav that was killed too early. I assume if a prove like ‘Sports Night’ was pitched today, it would probably net a comfy home on cable, and live for many seasons. However, it was at least five years ahead of its time for that. And network TV is famous for handling quality shows badly.

If you watched it while it was on, this box status is a substantial chance to relive its greatness. If you never had the pleasure, please hold the opportunity now to perceive something very special.

Writer/creator Aaron Sorkin and director Thomas Schlamme went on to form NBC’s “The West Flee” during the second season of this incredible series.

From the beginning, ABC had no clue of how to handle this display. First, they insisted that the producers ad a laugh track, because you don’t know when to laugh. Then, they started to promote it like a soap opera, because it had serious issues to deal with at times.

Ultimately, the quality of the note came through. A extraordinary cast provided helpful performances. Josh Charles (“A Few First-rate Men”, “SWAT”) and Sabrina Lloyd (“Sliders”) are the MVPs here, consistently giving the expose it’s heart. Peter Krause (“Six Feet Under”, “Dirty Sexy Money”), initially stiff in his “on air” role as Casey McCall, settled in well mid-first season.

The right gem here is Robert Guilamme (“Benson”), his Issac Jaffe is an splendid character brought to life with his gentle touch. Guilamme’s real-life stroke was written into the series, and when he returned in the second season made for some fantastic moments and sly dialogue delivered by the passe actor.

Unfortunately, try though they may, Cry! Factory has been unable to provide the option of killing the laugh track in the location. Fortunately, they have provided a grand modern position which beats the recent cheap, no-frills status that Disney provided several years ago.

“Slayers” is one of my all-time celebrated inspiring series and the best of the sizeable anime fantasy/comedy genre. It’s packed with action, adventure, bizarre characters, magic, monsters, and all the goofy humor one could ever want. Lina Inverse is the ultimate anime anti-heroine: a greedy, bad-tempered yet adorable genius sorceress who has made a career out of stealing from bandits.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Slayers – The Complete First Season! Click Here

The series’ opening salvo is an absolute classic and will order you just away whether or not this demonstrate is for you. The first episode has Lina-chan up to her usual business when she meets up with a dumb-as-a-box-of-hammers swordsman named Gourry. The two wind up “saving” a village from a dragon (if blowing half of the town apart can qualify as saving it) who insults our heroine and current companion by stepping over them “like two pieces of…” rather than squashing them. As many Slayers adventures do, the episode ends with Lina being speed out of town by furious villagers. Is it really dreadful Lina-chan’s fault that her spells are a bit overpowered and discretion is not in her vocabulary? Okay yes, but you’ve gotta like her anyways. One of my approved episodes of any television exhibit ever.

“Slayers” is a expose with several arcs in a given season. The pacing is usual spot-on with each memoir building up to a climax, but not taking too long to do so. A few comedic standalone episodes are thrown in and then the next yarn begins. After some misunderstandings Lina finds herself tutoring a good-two-shoes princess, Amelia, who wishes to employ Lina’s ultimate technique, the atom-bombish Dragon Slave, to enforce her kooky concept of justice. Amelia’s bizzare behavior proves to be a comedic centerpiece of the series and her magical abilites arrive in handy as well. The principal cast is completed once the first villain, Zelgadis, enters the fray. Zel is a chimera with rock hard skin, defective combat skills both magical and as a swordsman, and a mountainous chip on his shoulder. He’s also a fan approved. The supporting cast is also strong, but work best in little doses. White magician Sylphiel proves to be one of the series’ stronger characters and her interest in Gourry and soft-spoken demeanor invent her an moving fit with Lina’s rowdy band of stooges.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Slayers – The Complete First Season! Click Here

As Lina and her band depart further and further up the villain ladder, the series really begins to excel at combining it’s elements. The exhibit can switch effortlessly from slapstick comedy to serious plot-driven drama and encourage again without the two detracting from one another. Can you feel the tension in the fable confrontations aganst impossible odds as Lina pushes herself to the limit for the sake of all humanity? Yes. Will you mild laugh yourself humorous at the chicken-toting henchman dressed up as Col. Sanders luring our starving heroes into a trap using 11 herbs and spices? God, yes. Are Gourry’s overly dramatic cries of “SYLPHIEEEEELLLL!!!!” both ridiculous and somehow touching? Mmm hmmm.

I can honestly say there is nothing else quite like this explain. It knows it’s niche and it rarely stretches beyond it’s comfort zone, relying on recurring gags and goofy character-driven humor along with anecdote confrontations and storylines that should support fantasy fans eager throughout. The English dub has a lot of personality and jokes added into it and, as expected, the Japanese language track is a hoot as well. There are two more 5-star seasons of this fabulous television series available (“Slayers Next” and “Slayers Try”) as well as a feature film and several OVA’s which epic Lina’s days before meeting Gourry. Those are fun as well and feature better quality animation, but the three seasons of the television series are the absolute must-owns. Personally, I beget all of the unique, pricier “Slayers” releases and THAT, my friends, is a whole lot of my time and money I’ve spent on this series. These recent releases are remastered, the ticket is handsome, the expose is awesome, I esteem it. Fantasy fans must not go without; purchase it.

This series got me into anime in a substantial blueprint! An awesome speak cast (I saw it dubbed, for the most fraction, but the subtitle is stunning top-notch…all in all, a blooming deny translation either diagram), even though a couple relate actors change part-way through the season (for the better) . The first episode is what got me: Lina terrorizing a band of bandits, stealing their money (setting off the place), then being ambushed by them, and being “rescued” by stout, blond, and splendid (and stupid!) mercenary Gourrey–”If I gave you my name, you’d collect it dirty!” (awesome opening line) . Add in Zelgadis, the tormented chimera-man, and Amelia, the ever optimistic do-gooder clutz white magic user, and you have a fun adventure, filled with monsters, demons, magic, sword-fighting, and a lot of witty banter (a enormous deal about Lina’s ultra-petite chest size) .

Story: Lina steals from bandits. Bandits were holding a mighty appreciate that Zelgadis and his employer were searching for. First half of season revolves around the item and everyone scrambling for it. Then there is the climax where the head dreadful guy finds out that his dilemma is…well, that would waste the residence. Second half is where terrible guys’ minions peep revenge and their means to derive it.

Yes, this is hand-drawn art, but well done. A honorable site, righteous characters.

The second movie in Columbia’s newest wave of World War II movies (along with “The Caine Mutiny”) is the 1961 Academy Award-winning film for Best Special Effects, “The Guns of Navarone,” which stars Gregory Peck as Keith Mallory, the leader of a group of British commandos tasked with destroying two tall German anti-ship guns.

The British are desperate to evacuate 2,000 soldiers from the Aegean island of Kiros, with the only sea route through a stretch of water commanded by the guns that are encased inside a massive cliffside bunker that is immune to air attack.

Based on the best selling recent by Alistair (Where Eagles Dare) MacLean, Mallory has been working on occupied Crete for two years and as an expert mountaineer is the perfect choice to ferry the team to the only fragment of Navarone not monitored by the Germans – a 400-foot cliff.

Joining Peck is David Niven as explosives expert John Anthony Miller and Anthony Quinn as a Greek resistance fighter.

MacLean is known for being able to weave together a colossal memoir and this movie is consistently captivating. In fact the film was already afforded a fine special release on DVD in 2000. Columbia though have outdone themselves with this 2-disc space by adding a second audio commentary and four novel documentaries.

The current release included a rather dry, faltering, but informative commentary by director J. Lee Thompson, a smattering of archival featurettes of varying quality and an anecdotal documentary on the making of the describe featuring on-camera interviews with Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, James Darren and J. Lee Thompson named “Memories of Navarone” and running at 29:34. It’s a nice, breezy documentary and fascinating – detailing some of the experiences the cast had working on the represent.

However this current release includes a exciting commentary with historian Stephen J. Rubin who mentions that this film started the trend of Hollywood going outdoors. Up until this time most movies were filmed on the studios backlot, whereas this movie was filmed on the island of Rhodes. He also discusses the cast (including a very young Richard Harris) . Rubin also discusses some of the differences between the MacLean modern and the movie – which appear to be a number of changes to characterization and details some of the criticisms of the movie when it was released – including the fact that the actors were too venerable to play commando’s, many being as they were in their 40s and 50s. Though Rubin swiftly adds that he feels it was cast perfectly.

Also included are two fresh documentaries, the first of these “Forging the Guns of Navarone” runs at 13:58 and includes on camera interviews with Eve Williams-Jones (the used wife of producer Carl Foreman) and Assistant Director Peter Yates (who himself went on to become a very successful director in his occupy suitable) . Apparently Thompson was not the novel director for the project and Yates credits Thompson for his ability to jump straight into a film that had already shot distinguished of its second unit work as well as his ability to manage so many tremendous name actors. Yates also reveals that despite their on-screen animosity towards each other, both Niven and Peck got along well together clear to have as noteworthy fun as possible on the recount. Yates also recounts how the crew would refer to it as “The biggest B-feature ever made.”

The second fresh documentary “The Ironic Sage of Heroism” runs longer at 23:38 and is essentially an on-camera analysis of the movie by eminent Film Historian Sir Christopher Frayling (who was mistakenly credited with providing an audio commentary in the press release for this DVD release) . Frayling is quite though-provoking as he recounts such facts as Foreman’s initial reluctance to handle the project. Foreman once said that he was incapable of making a movie that did not fabricate statements and he initially saw the MacLean book as a simple action adventure. It was not until he re-read the current that he realized it could aid to construct statements about the futility of war and the ability of war to bring out the best in people.

Frayling also reflects on the fact that the movie was the first global production caper-style World War II movie to be played as an action adventure in a style he describes as “incredibly innovative.”

Also included on this current release is the restored intermission with rep that was seen in some European cities (it is listed as an extra since it is not allotment of the official lop of the movie) and featurettes on the Dimitri Tiomkin obtain which details the subtle differences throughout the movie and a entertaining stare at the UCLA restoration.

The restoration featurette details the tortured path towards restoring a film that was in such dreadful shape that they needed several sources of modern negative, both from Columbia and a private collector. In an example of the work the UCLA team had to do, the print they were provided by Columbia had the plane shatter at the beginning of the movie happen in expansive daylight. This apparently is how most people have seen the scene in original years. That was until one of the eagle-eyed team at UCLA noticed that one of the trucks had it’s headlights on and wondered why. Positive enough they were able to track down a copy of the print from a private collector that showed that the shatter happened at night with the camouflage various shades of blue – and that is how it was restored.

In another instance the print UCLA had also had the foul dubbing of Richard Harris where the censor had the word “bloody” replaced with “ruddy” for some of the screenings in the UK (the word “bloody” is considered a utter word in the UK) . The UCLA team prevailed again and were able to locate a copy of the proper audio quiet intact) .

On a sidenote the DVD also affords fans of Tiomkin the opportinity to hear the opening sequence sans the fable as a special feature on the second disc. This apparently is a special feature that had been requested for years.

The Guns of Navarone is a incredible film that touches upon the dispute of how difficult it can be to do fair choices during the course of a war. The screenplay is bewitching in the sense that every major character in the film has their absorb notions of unprejudiced how far they should go in applying the principal force “to gain the job done” in a war.

The movie is about six saboteurs who must raze two great guns, which reveal a anguish to the Allied Navy. At the very beginning of the movie, viewers immediately have their first taste of a proper pickle when Commodore Jensen, the organizer of the mission, has to resolve between sending six good men to an almost disastrous and suicidal mission or simply scrapping the mission and leaving 2,000 trapped British soldiers to a determined doom. Commodore Jensen sees the choice as a foregone conclusion and thus resorts to lying to the leaders of the mission in order to boost their confidence. Jensen however does feel the disaster of leadership as he tells a fellow officer “I’m impartial a man who has to send men off to die”.

The six saboteurs each have their original specialties and views of morality. The first saboteur is Captain Mallory, the best mountain climber in the world and a competent linguist. Captain Mallory is a soldier who now has a utilitarian belief of the world and no longer sees the world as dismal or white. The second saboteur is Major Roy Franklin who is known for his luck and determination. Roy is as focused to the mission as Mallory, only he does not appear to be so in the eyes of his friend Corporal Miller, the third saboteur. Corporal Miller is the self-righteous chemical explosives expert whose philanthropic perception of the world directs his loyalty only to his friends and himself. The fourth is Private Brown “the Butcher of Barcelona” whose specialties are working with engines and using a knife. Although Brown is a seasoned aged with many kills under his belt, he has become wary of the war. The fifth saboteur is Colonel Stavros. Stavros, like Mallory and Franklin, focuses to the task at hand, but is also ever thoughtful of his personal vendettas. Finally, the last saboteur is Private Pappadimos, whom Jensen describes as a “born killer”.

The honest views of the six saboteurs will clash with each other several times during the movie as they debate about how to conduct a war and deal with human life. The honest perceptions even present to be the undoing of some of the men. The beauty of the movie is that ultimately the ongoing theme of morality further extends to the two women who later join the mission. Even the Germans are not exempt from this theme as the “normal” German soldier’s character contrasts itself sharply from that of the inhumane SS officer.

It is not surprisingly to catch that many world leaders bask in watching The Guns of Navarone, since here is a film that touches upon an recount that is constantly ever-present in their minds. The burden of choosing the fates of others is after all, a burden that is felt by both the commander and the individual soldier alike.

The superbit version of The Guns of Navarone is an improvement over the first regular DVD release. The noticeable improvement is found mainly in the sound. A particular standout scene in terms of sound is where Stavros uses his sniper rifle to give conceal against the advancing German Army. The superbit represent quality while an improvement over the regular DVD release, is not as noticeably honorable as the superbit sound quality.

“Public Enemies” proves that Michael Mann is proper up there with Martin Scorsese at directing compelling crime dramas. This film, based on a book detailing the nexus of John Dillinger, J. Edgar Hoover, and Melvin Purvis, covers the last year and a half in the life of the celebrated bank robber, who was branded “Public Enemy Number 1″ by Hoover, who was building what would become the FBI. Chasing Dillinger for Hoover was Purvis, who relentlessly pursued Dillinger until the fateful night outside the Biography Theater in Chicago.

Johnny Depp plays Dillinger as a fun-loving but hazardous criminal whose only idea seems to be to live life on the edge until he falls off. As usual, his performance is curious and utterly believable. Billy Crudup wonderfully plays Hoover as a man obsessed with growing the Bureau, obsessed with public relations, and obsessed with capturing John Dilliger, and Christian Bale plays Purvis as an shiny, generous, and caught in the difficult dwelling of trying to procure Dillinger while at the same time magnificent a demanding, overbearing publicity seeker.

The film features ample supporting performances from Marion Cotillard as Dillinger’s girlfriend, Billie Frechette, and Stephen Lang as a aged Bureau agent assigned to hunt Dillinger.

This is film has plenty of action and thrills, but also possesses tall acting, sparkling writing, and masterful directing by Mann. Public Enemies is one the best films to approach out in the summer of ‘09.

“Public Enemies”, helmed by well-known director Michael Mann, is a thriller of the most testosterone fueled variety. It’s a lickety-split paced actioner brimming at the seams with intense shootouts and a well-stocked cast of steely-eyed, square-jawed men harboring classic narcissistic complexes. Johnny Depp makes a suave, calculating Dillinger. It’s more of a manufactured character than an interpretation of the proper life Dillinger, but this is of dinky consequence because Depp achieves stout theatrics with his glum glare and devil-may-care attitude. He plays it worthy as I imagine Steve McQueen would’ve in his heyday, plowing through his world with a sort of darkly icy, apathetic demeanor that suggests he doesn’t care one map or the other about anything.

The supporting characters are superlative as well, particularly Stephen Dorff as Homer Van Meter. There’s an intensity to his character that Dorff really brings out. In fact, I didn’t even spy him at first (interestingly, he looked very similar to actor Tim DeKay) . Jason Clarke, who portrays John “Red” Hamilton, is an actor primarily known for his television work. I surmise he was chosen for his striking resemblance to the proper life criminal; objective compare his photograph to the inferior mug of Hamilton. He’s probably the most featured gangster, other than Dillinger, being that Hamilton is portrayed as his legal hand man. Of course, Christian Bale turns in an able performance as respected G-Man Melvin Purvis – donning yet another one of his noted accents for the role.

The film begins in media res with an enthralling jailbreak, something which I greatly enjoyed. I was cheerful the film didn’t ruin time trying to justify Dillinger’s childhood and upbringing. There is no hollow attempt to apply reason to his actions or site blame for his anti-social behavior. In the kill it doesn’t matter what led him to a life of crime, particularly since over the years the man has transformed from a folk hero into a veritable yarn. It’s distinct Mann’s vision was ambitious. He attempted to pack all the nuances and complexities of Dillinger’s world into only two hours and because of this the slay product is a bit too busy. I derive the feeling that a bit of streamlining the script might not have been an bad concept. That aside, it’s sure that Mann knew what audiences wanted to leer is a rip-roarin’ consume on the robberies, shootouts, and defiance of the law that filled the bulk of Dillinger’s life upright on up until the bitter kill. This film performs those functions in spades!

The major lacking feature of the film is that characterization takes a backseat to the action. This is, perhaps, inevitable considering the tall ensemble cast and the fact that nearly every character is based on a very dependable, very noted person. Often many seemingly inspiring characters never quite gel with the audience because their screentime is so brief. One such character is Gilbert Catena, portrayed by Domenick Lombardozzi (probably best known for his role on HBO’s The Wire) . Tranquil, those aspects aside, every performance here is stellar. Unprejudiced perceive at the supporting cast which includes: David Wenham, Marion Cotillard, Giovanni Ribisi, and Billy Crudup, among others. It’s my interested hope that upon its release to home video there’s an extended crop of the film because I would treasure to perceive more of these characters (especially Magnificent Boy Floyd, since he is only in the film for a scant couple of minutes) .

I’ve noticed many critics mention that the film unnecessarily milks the climax of the film, which is obviously Dillinger’s execution outside of the Biograph Theatre. I didn’t mind this so mighty because it’s such an iconic event of the Public Enemy era, and more than that, the film portrays Dillinger’s death with real detail and follows what we know of the accurate event to the letter. The scene features numerous clips of the film Dillinger watched: Manhattan Melodrama, the gangster vehicle starring Clark Gable.

The film surmises, with pleasurable reason, that Dillinger probably identified with Gable’s character. It illustrates this by showing one of the haunting final scenes, when William Powell offers to have his death sentence commuted, Gable replies with “You consider you’re doing me a favor by keeping my locked up in this joint for the rest of my life? I don’t want it. If I can’t live the scheme I want, then at least let me die the device I want.” Dillinger’s face expressed ample notion, perhaps even compassion, with this statement. It’s a broad cinematic moment, especially since the audience is very well aware of what is about to transpire in his acquire life.

I give bonus points to the production crew for so aptly depicting mid-west America during the Depression. Many real-life buildings were redressed to explore as they did during the time and their efforts greatly enhance the atmosphere. Then there are the detailed setpieces (one of my favorites, though it’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it one, is Gilbert’s shop), the hairstyles and slick suits, the classic cars – they hit all the notes correctly. There’s even some extinct slang film fans will remember from gangster films made in the thirties, such the calling of prison guards “screws”.

The robbery scenes, being the lynchpin of any Dillinger chronicle, are somewhat brief but accurately recount Dillinger’s tactics and methods. Also, concerning precise history, this film does purchase liberties with what really occurred (like any film does) . Perhaps the most egregious liberties are taken concerning the demises of the various gangsters. For instance, Heavenly Boy Floyd is depicted as being killed months prior to Dillinger’s death (Dillinger even references his demise to Pervis), when in fact he died months afterward. Also, Homer Van Meter survived Dillinger, only to be killed a month later. These aspects are often a valuable unpleasant, because a filmmaker must strike a balance between reality and entertainment – and the two do not always intersect seamlessly. If you want a version that follows the facts exclusively – engage the book.

In summation, “Public Enemies” may not be remembered as a classic action film, but it will be remembered as a classic gangster film. The most gratifying aspect is that, recent for most action films, all the actors turn in very memorable performances. Some critics and the press have commented on how Bale is absent from nearly all the trailers and promotional materials for this film, but when you notice it, the reason is quite understandable. This is unquestionably Depp’s film, and though I concede to not having a particular predilection for him, his role here is not to be missed. This is well worth the tag of admission!

The Secret is one of the best produced and edited DVDs of its kind that I have ever seen. And the line-up of teachers and presenters is genuine. There is only one reason I give this DVD four stars instead of five. The Secret is about the Law of Attraction, and how we can exercise that Law to “attract” into our lives anything we want. But it spends 95% of the time talking only about being focused on what you want (rather than what you don’t want), and generating clear feelings about that. It only spends 5% of the time making it determined that what we really attract into our lives is the people, circumstances, and opportunities that lead us to what we want. In other words, when we use the principles mentioned in The Secret, doors begin. But we have to spy those doors for what they are and go through them. And that involves action. Many people who gawk The Secret accelerate away with the impression that visualization and obvious feelings is all it takes. It isn’t. You aloof have to do something. As long as you retain that in mind, The Secret contains information that can be life altering. Bask In!

Steven Lane Taylor, Author of Row, Row, Row Your Boat: A Guide For Living Life In The Divine Flow

With all the hype about The Secret, I was enthusiastic to fetch out what everyone was talking about. I bought both the DVD and the CD space and watched with tall anticipation.

Perhaps because I have studied and utilized for over 2 decades some of the most noteworthy mindset tools, processes and technologies for creating what you want, my expectations may have been skewed compared to those who have never heard of or applied such concepts as the law of attraction.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Secret! Click Here

That is not to say the DVD/CD does not have value. I am distinct there are people whose lives have been changed by it. I believe they did an outstanding marketing job. An outstanding “packaging” job in creating The Secret. The attraction principles do work, and they provided a stout introduction to those who have not been exposed to them before.

For me personally, my first disappointment was the fact that what was dramatically (and cleverly) built up as “a secret” – which to me something you know that I don’t – was hardly a secret. These principles have been around for centuries, have been mainstream for decades, with thousands of books, seminars, etc. covering the same principles. I don’t enjoy books, tapes, etc. that overpromise and under hiss. So, to me, hardly a secret.

My second disappointment was the lack of depth around the subject matter. If you want more in-dpeth and leading edge info about how our thoughts earn our reality, invest in the DVD “What the Bleep? ” It offers spicy leading edge quantum physics principles, along with broad animation explaining in simple layman terms, why and how we accomplish our realities. In fact, some of the scientists on The Secret *first* appeared in “What the Bleep? ” I almost felt when I was watching The Secret, that they copied “What the Bleep? ” in many respects, although at a more superficial level.

My third disappointment/concern is how some Secret followers will justify the messagge in the movie. Again my perspective may be slightly skewed because I trained in and work with NLP (Neurolinguistic Programmming) which works drectly with the subconscious mind for helping people acquire accelerated breakthroughs in their lives. The suggestions, recommmended processes, etc. in The Secret work primarily with the conscious mind. Yet it is our subconscious mind that drives 80% of our behaviors and outcomes in life.

Yes, if you practice their recommendations for months and months, the suggestions may eventually sink into our subconscious. However there are simpler, quicker ways to get what you want. The other share of that, because the subconscious mind does drive our results, there are many blocks — such as “secondary gains” for staying stuck, values conflicts, shrimp beliefs, etc. – below our conscious awareness that stops us from having what we want. Because the movie does not address the disagreement between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind, and treats the whole topic superficially as why some people manifest and some don’t, it creates the illusion that as long as you practice their suggestions, you will change your life. There is so powerful more than what is presented as to what are the differences that build the incompatibility to creating what you want.

While I am gratified that so many people are becoming more aware of these principles, I am concerned about the fallout as well. I am hearing people do potentially execrable things like go into deeper debt, making dramatic life changes with blind faith, because the DVD tells them they can have what they want if they unprejudiced occupy, etc.

I would suggest if you seize the DVD to hold a few things that most resonated with you, and apply them to your life, as long as you don’t sacrifice or overhaul other areas of your life without looking at the ample describe. Sort out the glitz from the message. Also check what is not right for you and let go of it.

I would recommend the movie “what the bleep? ” It goes hand in hand with The Secret, although more in depth and was the modern movie that brought these concepts mainstream.

Third, I recommend that you check out book on NLP (as well as hypnosis which is a sister discipline) . Out of all the mindset tools and technologies I have veteran in over 20 years, I have found they are by far the most remarkable. One of the best “beginner” books is: “NLP: The Novel Technology of Achievement”.

Good luck and may your jog be an abundant one!

Where the first season covered Tony’s relationship with his mother and that relationship causing him to gaze a therapist; the second season went more along the lines of him as a brother; the third season was based on Tony and Carmela as parents and of course, this fourth season was highly focused on their marriage, all coming to an improbable head in the final episode.

I’ve heard several people say that the third and fourth seasons weren’t as strong and as “biting” as the first two seasons, I couldn’t disagree more. This fourth season is an extremely intense season and is fair as dramatically compelling and challenging as the previous three. Very few dramatic series can even compare to The Sopranos where it entertains on all levels, from consuming drama to boring pan laughable moments.

Combining the continued elements of wonderful writing, generous direction and exceptional acting all do this fourth season another resounding success in the Sopranos series and a long wait until March of 2004 for the fifth season to kicks in.

While the death count has steadily decreased in subsequent seasons, The Sopranos is not going soft, but rather evolving. In the first season, everything was establish together. In number two, an emphasis was placed on Tony’s business: busting out, poker games, scams, power struggles, traders, etc. In season 3, the series showed it is not prone to repetition. Instead of Ralph becoming another Richie, his ability to develop money kept him alive.

Now the fourth and calm not the last season. Seemingly every episode ended with an melancholy shot of Tony and Carmela alone together, but collected apart: In bed with Carmela facing away, in the kitchen with Tony leaning on the couch, in the bathroom with Carmela in the tub. And after all this, Tony bought “Whitecaps”, his plot of saying that he wanted to sustain his family together forever. But Carmela saw it as impartial “a bigger version of a diamond ring.” As Dean Martin sings at the ruin of the finale, “It’s because, my girl’s suitable here.”

Then the demise of Ralph, foreshadowed when Jonny Sack comments “I should have let Tony carve your head off last year.” Ralph was kept around only because of money and when he hands Tony an envelope and says “At least I’m friendly for something,” Tony can’t serve but agree. And when Ralph is being `silenced’ by Tony in `Whoever Did This’, Tony comments “She was a pretty creature, what did she ever do to you? ” It becomes hazy whether he is referring to Pie-O-My or Tracy when he sees her describe at the Bing. The “thousand incidents with that guy” finally procure up to Ralph.

By the kill of the season, Tony has a business jam that will likely be settled somehow in season 5. Tony has conspired with Carmine to waste Jonny Sack, and negotiated with Jonny to ruin Carmine. It is unclear by season’s kill exactly who knows what and who is being station up.

The biggest gripes from viewers seemed to be the oddness of the Carmela / Furio and Janice / Bacala storylines. I consider more in depth viewing will serve people to understand the subtleness of season 4. And mind you a lot of season 4 storylines will likely carry over into 5. The Sopranos is ongoing, and doesn’t play by the national network `close all storylines in the finale and leave one cliffhanger’ rule.

My biggest beef was HBO’s ruining the finale with posting online that Uncle Junior’s would regain a mistrial and showing in the trailer a sunless SUV being shot into. Of course when it aired and a sad SUV pulled up, any element of shock was completely ruined.

Season 4 is very deep and curious, and has taken me dozens of viewings to understand underlying themes, and will select many more to engage them all and procure all the jokes (like Tony feeling like the ‘Reverend Rodney King Jr.’) Hopefully the DVD and its audio commentary will abet. Like what was Tony’s `Italian Immigrant’ dream enlighten to mean?

In an consuming tidbit, Howard Caine plays three different German officers on Hogan’s Heroes. For those of you not familiuar with the show; Hogan’s Heroes was a tremendous military sitcom. It paved the plot for other military shows such as M.A.S.H. and The A-Team. The basic plotline of the present is that Hogan and four other prisoners of WWII are being held in a german P.O.W. camp. Hogan and his friends prefer advantage of their location to sabotage the Germans any plan they can. It has many hilarious moments, usually resulting from the Germans led by Col. Klink who are incompetent and completly oblivious to what is going on proper under their noses. Hogan and his men have underground tunnels and a seemingly endless supply of disguises at their disposal. My well-liked character of the point to was Colonel Klink who was played to perfection by Werner Klemperer. You can procure him reprising his role in the season 5 episode of the Simpsons “The Last Temptation of Homer” where he is Homer’s guardian angel. I am thankful that this exhibit will finally be available in season sets on DVD. I would also care for to seek some bonus features on these DVDs but since this is a Paramount release I am skeptical that there will be any. This should be available on March 15. So until then be pleased this list of the 32 season 1 episodes that should all be included on this DVD location.
